An undisclosed number of terror suspects linked to the Islamist group Al Shabaab managed to escape on Monday after police acting on intelligence managed to foil a planned terror attack on a Mombasa mall.

According to top police sources, the attackers were planning to raid a mall in the prestigious Nyali estate and massacre Kenyans.

Two of the suspects have been identified as Mahmoud Salim Mohamed ID No. 30750990 and Hussein Omar Said ID No. 30229658. The two are said to be the leaders of the group that was planning the attack.

Mr Hussein Omar Said was also in the police list of most wanted criminals that was circulated by Inspector General Joseph Boinett last year.

According to police sources, Omar Said has been key in several attacks and planned attacks in Kenya including the 2014 Mpeketoni attack and botched attack on a Military Camp in Lamu near Boni Forest.

Police are now appealing to Kenyans with any information to inform them in order to address this insecurity.
