Police on Monday morning used tear gas canisters to disperse a protest dubbed #TakeBackKenya by a group that had gathered near the Tom Mboya statue in Nairobi.

The group was marching along Moi avenue and had planned to move around the City centre before police interfered with their plans,

”Woke up bright & early to celebrate our “independence day” through #TakeBackKenya march around Nairobi CBD. This is the result. Freedom? NO!,” one of the protesters wrote on Twitter.

The group claims to be protesting ‘daily plundering of public funds by government officials’ through corruption.

Three people were arrested during the protests.

The protesters dispersed and rushed to Jevanjee Gardens where they said they will proceed with another march.

Meanwhile, Nairobi police boss Japheth Koome divulged that the group had not been permitted to protest thus they had to be stopped.
