Details have emerged on how departed Benga maestro, John DeMathew, spent his last moments before the fatal accident on Sunday night.

According to his close friend and fellow singer, Mike Rua, DeMathew looked disturbed and was beside himself.

The two spent the whole of Sunday together at a fundraiser in Gatanga organized in support of fellow musician Peter Kagia’s sick child.

“We spent the whole of yesterday with him and we talked a lot, about music, about rights for musicians as he was the Chairman of Tamco (Talented Musicians Cooperative),” an emotional Mike Rua narrated.

“The last moments, he was crying and crying I don’t know what was the problem because we talked about some issues we had some controversies here and there (pauses and sighs). I don’t think it is the right time to talk about this thing, kindly call me sometime later,” he added.

DeMathew would meet his death about 30 minutes after leaving Kigia’s Gatanga home after his car rammed into a stationary lorry along Thika Road, near the Blue Post Hotel.

He was rushed to Thika Nursing Home where he was pronounced dead on arrival.

His body is being preserved at the Kenyatta University mortuary as the family plans for his final send off.
