Anti-riot Police Drill In Kisumu Intimidating voters

Security operations have been in top gear for the past few days, something that has caused anxiety ahead of the elections that are only eleven days away.

Ruth Odinga and Kisumu City Residents Vice chairman, Audi Ogada on Tuesday raised concern over the public display of weapons

“We are concerned by the ongoing police activities in Kisumu town as this borders on intimidation of voters ahead of the elections.”

“Why are they conducting the drill now? Are they pre-empting violence? We want acting Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i to tell us what is happening to restore confidence among the people,” Ms Odinga said.

Consequently, NASA on Thursday moved to court to bar the Interior ministry from deploying troops to violence prone areas.

They said the plan to use officers might scare away voters on August 8.

The Interior ministry has however insisted that the drills are only meant to enhance security.
