Tension was very high in Mumias town, Kakamega County this afternoon after two rival groups almost clashed. ODM group led by Kakamega Governor and ODM deputy party leader Wycliffe Oparanya and another led by National ODM youth leader Rashid Mohammed almost engaged in battle because the latter is against Raila’s visit to Mumias town and Oparanya’s development project in the area.
Governor Oparanya was today in the area to launch several projects including the new Mumias bus terminus among others. Rashid’s group on the other hand pitched camp at Mumias cultural hall and as Oparanya passed by the hall’s premises, Rashid’s group started throwing stones and logs at Oparanya’s group. Oparanya did rounds across Mumias town with heavily armed youth chanting songs and the police.
Addressing the public at Mumias bus terminus, Rashid claimed the governor has brought cheap development to the area yet Mumias is second after Kakamega town in paying taxes. He also claimed corruption has brought down Mumias Sugar Company yet the governor has done nothing to revive it. He again claimed Raila owes Mumias a debt of up to 300 million which he should settle before making his planned visit to the area. Rashid also claimed, Raila when in in leadership failed to develop Western yet Nyanza is more developed. Both groups did rounds around the town for the better part of the afternoon.
