Former Kenyan Prime Minister Raila Odinga has revealed that he wanted President Uhuru Kenyatta and his deputy William Ruto jailed at the International Criminal Court in connection to the 2007-2008 post election violence that led to the death of at least 1,300 people and over half a million other left homeless.

In an interview with AFP, Raila said that ICC was blackmailed by Kenya and African states to drop the case facing Uhuru and Ruto.

“The ICC’s failure to try top Kenyan leaders for crimes against humanity in the country’s worst violence since independence spells “doom” for global efforts to fight impunity,” he told AFP.

He went ahead to term African countries as “the biggest violators currently of human rights”, saying that they need the ICC more.

“This decision spells doom for the international justice system and fight against impunity,” Odinga.

“No African head of state need to fear being tried by the ICC because you can destroy the evidence, you can kill witnesses.”

“ICC allowed itself to be blackmailed by Kenya through the AU (African Union) that African states are going to pull out because you are trying African heads of state.”
